What Actually Counts as an "AI" Cat Flap?
The term is thrown around loosely. To be genuinely AI-powered, a cat flap needs to:
- Have an onboard camera capturing images of the cat approaching.
- Run a machine-learning model (usually on-device or in the cloud) that classifies what it sees — cat identity, whether the cat is carrying prey, etc.
- Act on the classification — unlocking, locking, or alerting you.
A plain microchip flap (SureFlap, PetSafe, Cat Mate) is not AI. It reads a passive RFID chip and checks it against a whitelist. That's a database lookup, not machine learning.
A smart flap with app control (SureFlap Connect) is not AI. It adds Wi-Fi connectivity and scheduling to a microchip flap. Still no camera, still no model.
By the strict definition, only one flap currently sold in the UK qualifies as AI: OnlyCat.

OnlyCat launched in 2023 and is the first commercially available cat flap with onboard AI prey detection. A camera above the flap captures a short image sequence as the cat approaches from outside. An onboard neural network classifies whether the cat is carrying prey (mouse, bird, vole, insect). If prey is detected, the flap stays locked and sends a photo alert to your phone.
Key features:
• Prey detection with claimed >95% accuracy on the training set (real-world we see closer to 85–90% — still transformative if your cat is a hunter).
• Photo/video log of every entry attempt in the OnlyCat app.
• Standard microchip identification as well as the AI (so it blocks neighbour cats too).

• UK-designed and supported — Cambridge-based team, responsive support.
Who it's for: households where the cat regularly brings home prey and it's causing genuine distress (or ruining the carpet). The problem it solves is unique — no microchip flap can do this at any price.

Things Marketed as AI That Aren't
A few products in the wider market claim "AI" branding without meeting the definition above:
• "Smart" microchip flaps (SureFlap Connect, PetSafe Smart Door) — Wi-Fi and app control, no camera, no ML. Very useful, but not AI.
• Petcube / camera-only products — cameras with pet recognition, but they don't control a flap.
• Cheap Amazon "AI cat door" listings — usually rebranded PIR-sensor flaps with app control. No image recognition. Avoid.
If a product claims AI, look for the specific words "onboard camera" and "image recognition" or "prey detection" in the spec sheet. If either is missing, it isn't AI.
OnlyCat vs SureFlap — Head-to-Head
Most UK customers considering OnlyCat are also considering a standard SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap or SureFlap Pet Door. Here's how they compare in the ways that matter:
Selective entry (blocking neighbour cats): Both do this via microchip. Tie.

What About Other AI Flaps Coming Soon?
As of mid-2026, we're aware of two other AI cat flap projects at development or crowdfunding stage — one US-based, one European. Neither is on sale in the UK with a working product. We'll update this post when they ship.
SurePetcare (parent of SureFlap) has not publicly announced an AI-camera product, though industry watchers expect one within 2–3 years given SureFlap's dominance and OnlyCat's proof of the category.
Can You Fit an AI Cat Flap Into a Glass Door?
Yes — but it's a specialist glass job. OnlyCat is larger than a standard SureFlap and needs a mains power cable run to the flap. That means:
- We order a brand-new factory-cut toughened double-glazed unit with the correct larger aperture. We never cut existing toughened glass — it would shatter. See our glass door installation page.
- We plan a discreet cable run from the flap to the nearest power socket. Usually along the frame and skirting; occasionally through the wall.
- Total install time is typically 90–120 minutes on the fitting day (plus 1–3 weeks lead time for the toughened unit).

Worth it if:
• Your cat brings home prey more than once a month
• You've tried everything else (bell collar, high-visibility collar, keeping the cat in at dawn/dusk) and nothing worked
• The prey issue is causing genuine household stress
Not worth it if:
• Your cat rarely hunts
• You want app control / curfew — a SureFlap Connect at £140 does that for a fraction of the cost
• You want selective entry only — a standard SureFlap at £80 does that job perfectly
AI cat flaps are a problem-specific solution, not a general upgrade. If you have the specific problem, they are genuinely transformative and worth every penny. If you don't, save the £500 and buy a SureFlap.
