Cat Flap for Triple Glazed Doors — Is It Possible? (UK Guide)
The Short Answer
Yes — a cat flap can be fitted into a triple glazed door. The process is the same as double glazing with one difference: we order a brand-new factory-cut triple-glazed unit (three panes of glass with two spacer bars and two argon-filled cavities) with the cat flap aperture pre-cut at the factory.
We never cut the existing toughened glass — it would shatter the moment the blade touched it. Every cat flap in glass is a full glass-unit replacement, not a cut into your existing pane.
Typical cost: from £380–£500 fitted for a standard aperture in a triple glazed uPVC or composite door, including the new triple-glazed unit and cat flap install. Lead time 2–4 weeks for the new unit.
Why Triple Glazing Is Different From Double
A double-glazed unit is two panes of toughened glass with one spacer bar and one gas-filled cavity — typically 24 mm or 28 mm total thickness. A triple-glazed unit adds a third pane and a second cavity, typically 36–44 mm total thickness.
For cat flap installs, the differences that matter are:
• Cat flap tunnel depth. Standard cat flaps have a tunnel of around 45–75 mm. Some slimline models won't fit a 44 mm triple-glazed unit plus the flap seal. We select the flap to match the glass thickness — usually a Pet-Tek or SureFlap with the correct tunnel extender.
• Unit weight. A triple unit is roughly 50% heavier than the double it replaces. Two people are needed on the fitting day (single-person installs aren't safe on triple).
• Lead time. Triple-glazed manufacturers are typically 2–4 weeks versus 1–2 weeks for double.
• Cost. The unit itself is 30–50% more expensive to manufacture.
Everything else — the flap brand, the microchip options, the sealing method — is identical to a double-glazed install.
The Step-by-Step Process
- Site survey / measure. We measure the existing triple-glazed unit to the millimetre — width, height, and total thickness (crucial for triple).
2. Flap selection. We recommend a flap with the correct tunnel depth for your glass thickness. Pet-Tek, SureFlap and Closer Pets all offer models suitable for triple glazing.
3. Factory order. We order a brand-new triple-glazed unit from a UK toughened-glass manufacturer with the cat flap aperture pre-cut in the factory, using CNC cutting before toughening (glass cannot be cut *after* toughening — see our why toughened glass cannot be cut explainer).
4. Lead time 2–4 weeks. You keep using the door normally while the unit is manufactured.
5. Fitting day, 90–120 minutes. Two fitters remove the old glass unit, install the new triple-glazed unit into your existing frame, and fit the cat flap into the pre-cut aperture with weather seals.
6. Warranty. 3-year workmanship guarantee on the install plus the manufacturer's guarantee on the glass unit (typically 5–10 years against sealed-unit failure).
Does Fitting a Cat Flap Reduce the Thermal Performance?
A little, but less than most people expect. A quality triple-glazed unit has a U-value around 0.6–0.9 W/m²K. The cat flap itself has a U-value around 1.6–2.2 W/m²K depending on brand — worse than the glass but better than most solid doors.
Because the flap is a small proportion of the total door area (typically 5–8%), the overall door U-value only worsens by around 0.1–0.2 W/m²K. In real terms, that's a few pounds a year in extra heating cost — negligible.
What matters more is the quality of the seal around the flap. A poorly sealed install lets air move between the flap frame and the glass, which is worse than the flap itself. We seal every install with the correct low-modulus neutral-cure silicone (never acetic — it attacks the sealed-unit edge).
What About Passivhaus or New Builds?
Modern new builds and Passivhaus specifications often use triple glazing with warm-edge spacers, argon or krypton fill, and low-e coatings on multiple faces. These are the highest-performance glass units in UK residential use.
We can still fit a cat flap — but two extras apply:
• Krypton-filled units cost 15–25% more than argon; factor this into the quote.
• Multi-coated low-e units need to be re-manufactured with the coatings intact around the aperture — the factory handles this automatically but adds a few days to lead time.
Passivhaus certification is not invalidated by a cat flap install provided the replacement unit meets or exceeds the original spec. Get the original glass specification from your builder or window supplier before we quote so we can order like-for-like.
Cost Breakdown
For a standard-sized cat flap in a triple glazed uPVC or composite door in our coverage area:
• New triple-glazed unit (factory-cut): £220–£340 depending on size and spec
• Cat flap (Pet-Tek, SureFlap or similar): £30–£120 depending on model
• Installation labour: £120–£150 (two fitters, 90–120 minutes)
• Total supplied and fitted: from £380 all-in
Compared to double glazing (from £280), you're paying roughly £100–£200 extra for the triple-glazed unit. See our cost calculator for an instant estimate for your specific door.
For bi-fold, patio and aluminium triple-glazed doors, add £40–£80 for the more complex glazing beads.
